Holsters for Colt Python
How to choose the best holster for your Colt Python 6 inch
Choosing the right Colt Python 6 inch holster depends on your intended use, comfort preferences, and draw style. A well-fitted holster should secure the revolver, allow a smooth draw, and distribute weight effectively. Whether you need deep concealment, open carry, or outdoor versatility, matching holster type to activity ensures comfort and access. Material choice—such as leather for classic retention or Kydex for durability—further refines the selection.

Carry Options for Colt Python 6 inch holsters
Concealed Carry
The Colt Python 6 inch is a large revolver, making concealed carry challenging. While an IWB Colt Python concealed carry holster can work for discreet carry under loose clothing, shoulder holsters are often a more practical option, offering comfort and balance. Chest holsters may also be suitable for concealed carry in outdoor environments when paired with a jacket.
IWB Holsters
A Colt Python IWB holster fits inside the waistband for discreet carry without sacrificing access. These holsters offer good concealment for a large-frame revolver like the Colt Python 6 inch. Look for reinforced retention and sweat guards to enhance daily wear. Adjustable cant and ride height improve draw ergonomics.
OWB Holsters
An OWB Colt Python holster secures the firearm outside the waistband, ideal for open carry or range use. High-ride pancake styles can balance concealability and comfort. Leather or molded synthetic designs ensure the revolver stays firmly holstered with quick access.
Shoulder Holsters
A shoulder holster for Colt Python evenly distributes weight across the shoulders, making it a solid option for larger revolvers. This carry method suits users who sit for long periods or wear jackets regularly. Horizontal and vertical carry styles provide flexibility in draw position and comfort.
Chest Holsters
A Chest Holster for Colt Python 6 inch is ideal for backcountry carry, hiking, or ATV riding. It positions the revolver high on the torso for rapid access while keeping it out of the way of gear or pack straps. Chest holsters work well for those who prioritize mobility and utility.
Western Holsters
A western holster for Colt Python blends classic style with rugged functionality. These holsters typically feature thick leather, secure strap retention, and traditional drop-leg configurations. Perfect for revolver enthusiasts and cowboy-action shooters seeking period-authentic gear.
Duty Holsters
A Colt Python duty holster is designed for professional use with active retention systems and durable build. These holsters accommodate belt rigs and provide secure carry during patrol or range qualification. Look for level II or III retention for enhanced security.
Cross Draw Holsters
A Colt Python cross draw holster offers quick access from a seated position or when driving. It places the revolver on the opposite side of the dominant hand, favoring defensive postures and ease of draw in confined spaces. Ideal for range practice and backup carry.
Drop Leg Holsters
A Colt Python drop leg holster is an excellent choice for those who prefer carrying their revolver in a tactical and highly accessible position. Mounted on the thigh, it distributes the weight of the heavy 6-inch barrel more evenly, making it easier to draw quickly without straining the hip or lower back. This setup is particularly useful for open carry, outdoor activities, or range use, where comfort, stability, and fast access are essential.

Overall, highly pleased - but there is a caution I must put out to others considering this rig for revolvers. My Colt Python 6" is my pride and joy, and although I actually don't have any intention of public conceal carry this monstrosity (albeit, there may be situations where pulling a most evident hand-cannon may be the defusing element of a situation), I wanted a rig I could use at home if I have to do a walk and check, bare chested, and wearing typical pajama bottoms. A shoulder holster seemed like the answer. I had initially considered the one side carry, but to be frank, "elastic components" on anything doesn't fill me with confidence. This version with the ammo pouches being all leather, and having a couple speed loaders of .357 definitely adds to the confidence level, I went with this far more expensive option. However, the speed loader pouches are THICC. So much so, that matter how I adjusted, they got in the way of my strong side, something that absolutely plummets the confidence ratio. I didn't really think of this issue beforehand, and I am sure the semi-auto magazine form is far better, but it did leave me at a loss with what to do with this rig. Answer! I took off the speed loaders, looped the bands together, and put a gel cushion (the kind you put on luggage handles) on the loop for under the armpit. Then I double circled the belt loop on the speed loader, attached it to the holster belt loop, and ba da bing, ba da boom. I got a comfortable, practical one-side carry shoulder holster with no elastic and the speed loaders still in easy reach with full freedom of my strong side. Holster draw practice bare chested (and in pajama bottoms), weak side hand gripping the over case of the holster, strong hand flipping off the retaining strap and pulling down and out and present with elbow leveraged against my side, 1.5 seconds (10 ft distance). Kudos to design and craftmanship that let me fairly easily work out a good solution for my desires. And yes, the restraining strap was the hardest part to stretch out - I bought the leather care kit along with the rig, and it answered perfectly well.

The fit and finish were excellent. The snaps for the speed loaders were very stiff initially. This is my third holster and I plan on ordering again. VERY satisfied!

Fits my 6" 1978 Colt Python perfectly. Very nice leather.
