About Heckler & Koch USP (cal .45)
Heckler & Koch is a German company that manufactures handguns, military rifles, submachine guns, and grenade launchers. It’s story began after WW II. when the former designers of Mauser pistols started a machine tool plant in the former arms factory. They had responded to the need of the West German Bundeswehr in 1956 and their need of firearms and built the G3 rifle, which was based on the design of the Spanish CETME rifle.
The use of a frame that is not completely metallic drastically reduces the weight of the Heckler Koch USP cal. 45. The standard model H&K; USP 45 Full Size weighs in at less than two pounds, regardless of caliber (The Unofficial Heckler & Koch USP Home Page). The polymer material, in addition to being lightweight, allows the frame to be thinner in some areas such as the magwell. Another feature that makes cleaning easier is the contained recoil spring on HKUSP45 pistols. During firing, gasses cycle the slide back then the recoil spring pushes the slide back forward to chamber the next round after the recently fired round has been ejected. On conventional weapons the recoil spring is compressed and can literally fly out of the weapon during disassembly if a user is not careful. The HK USP .45 series also features a lanyard loop, a feature that is common on combat pistols, that allows a user to attach his or her weapon to a belt, strap, or other object. All USP handguns feature an accessory rail under the slide just in front of the trigger guard that allows users to easily mount standard size tactical flashlights, laser sights, pistol bayonets, and other rail mounted accessories. H&K; also included a safety device in the magwell of all pistols delivered on or after October 1999 that prevents these pistols from firing when a user activates what is referred to as a lock out device by using a small key.
