About Beretta 92 FS

Beretta is probably the largest company producing firearms in the world. It's output is approximately 1,500 produced weapons a day. One of the biggest achievements of Beretta is definitely the fact that the American Armed Forces and State Police Forces started using Beretta 92 series in 1985. The company added to its classical sporting guns production a completely new line of hunting apparel and accessories, clay target shooting and outdoor sports items in the early 1990s.

The Beretta 92 was originally designed in 1975, and production began in 1976. Many variants in several different calibers continue to be used to the present. But currently, our aim is to present the 92 FS model. The Beretta 92 FS is a short recoil semi-automatic pistol made by the Fabbrica D' Armi Pietro Beretta SpA. This pistol is hammer fired and comes with a double-action (DA/SA) trigger. The frame is made of anodized aluminum and finished with the plastic grip. The safety of 92FS is assured by the slide mounted safety or decocker lever. The Beretta 92FS with its overall length of 8.5” belongs to the category of full-sized pistols and comes with a 4.9” long barrel. Its double stack magazine can hold up to 15 + 1 rounds of 9 mm Luger ammo.

The Beretta 92FS was originally designed for military purposes. But it’s not only a favorite of military and law enforcement pros, but it’s starred in many movies, television shows and video games. So there is no surprise that it became very popular and many folks own it. There is also no surprise that the Beretta 92FS has a few competitors across the market. Some of the most known are Glock 17, Glock 19, Sig Sauer P226, CZ 75 B or even models made by Beretta just like the Beretta M9 or Beretta 92X full size. We decided to compare it with the Sig Sauer P226 and if you wish to find out more about the similarities and differences between these two lovely pistols, simply click here.

The Beretta 92FS is a full-sized pistol with the open slide design. This design isn’t just about looking cool or unique, and it’s actually a practical design. The first advantage of the open slide design is the reduction in weight. On a semi-auto handgun, the weight of the slide moving back and forth causes more felt or perceived recoil. Less slide mass means less mass moving around. The open slide also ensures the world is your ejection port, and there is a minimal chance for a round to fail to eject. The open slide design also gives more direct access to the chamber in the rare event there is a failure. It’s quick to fix with the max room possible to maneuver your hands to free an error. When talking about the dimension of 92FS, the pistol is overall 8.5” long, 1.5” wide, 5.5” high and weighs 34.4-oz when unloaded. The Beretta 92FS has a 4.9” long barrel and comes with a double stack magazine that can hold up to 15 + 1 rounds of 9mm Luger cartridge.

Construction wise, the Beretta 92 FS is built on an alloy frame made of anodized aluminum. The grip angle and the front sight integrated with the slide are common to earlier Beretta pistols. The 92FS features slide-mounted safety with a decocker. The trigger guard is squared slightly, and the gun comes in a number of different finishes, including the two-tone Inox and all stainless models. This pistol is equipped with fixed steel 3-dot, pinned front, windage adjustable rear sights as well. The magazines are a little heavy due to the fact that they are made of steel. The initial 15-round magazines designed for the 9mm Luger cartridge cost approx $29, but in case this capacity is not enough for you, the magazines can be extended to maximum capacity of 30 rounds. The extended magazines cost $40 each.

As mentioned, the 92 FS initially comes with the fixed 3-dot sights. However, frankly the Beretta 92FS is lacking some features expected in a modern firearm. Notably absent is an accessory rail. Weapon-mounted lights are pretty common these days, and it’s irritating  to have a gun as big as the 92FS and be unable to attach one. There is also the issue of the sights. The factory sights aren’t bad, but to be honest they are a little bit dated. Just about any modern service pistol will have provisions for replacing the sights with night sights, flat-black sights, fiber optic sights, or just refreshing the stock sights should they get dented, dinged, or bent. Unfortunately, with the 92FS replacing the sight means replacing the slide. Fortunately, Recover Tactical does have a rail system that replaces the grips and adds a rail to your Beretta 92FS. As this pistol has a tactical rail, it is easy to attach a tactical light or laser to it. If you wish to know what the light and laser options for your 92FS are, simply check them out here.

Now, let’s focus on the accuracy and the range performance of the 92FS pistol. The 92FS is a very comfortable gun to hold. The rear of the grip accommodates a small ‘beavertail’ which keeps the hammer from striking your hand and provides a good measure of control over the gun. It allows you to assume a nice, high grip without worrying about hammer or slide bite, and if you’ve ever experienced either, you’ll know how valuable this nub is. Yes, it’s a big weapon, but that size and weight is an advantage. Recoil is very low, as is muzzle rise. It’s easy to keep it on target and doesn’t scare new shooters due to recoil or discomfort. Overall, it’s straightforward to control and to keep or get back on target. The little recoil and muzzle climb make it an excellent combat pistol. What to add? The Beretta 92FS is fortunately one of those guns that can be rapidly fired and controlled without much difficulty.

Although the 92FS seems to be accurate enough bringing a great shooting experience, there is still a place for improvements. The accuracy can be upgraded by adding a tactical light or laser. However, as mentioned before, it is not that easy with 92FS due to lacking the rail. But it’s not impossible. For example there are a few Red Laser Sights designed to fit Beretta 92FS with grip activation which could be the way to upgrade it. And I’m sure you’ll find more options apart from this example on the internet. However, whether you decide to get an aftermarket light or laser attachment to your 92FS or not, you shouldn’t forget about another very important thing. And that’s definitely to keep your pistol well secured, which can be assured by choosing the well-fitting Beretta 92FS holster. With the dimensions of the 92FS in mind, the most suitable would be the Beretta 92FS OWB holster. But it’s up to your preference and if you like it concealed, there is a whole offer of Beretta 92FS concealed carry holsters as well. In case you are looking for more information, check out our Beretta 92FS holsters recommendations for 2021.

It is known that most people who have tried the 92FS either love it or hate it, there is no in-between. It's an older design and there are improvements that can be made and have been made, to improve it. And yes, some minor issues may occur when using it. But the core pistol is dead-on reliable and proven on the battlefield in humid jungles, on snow-covered mountains, and scorching deserts.

So the Beretta 92FS definitely has a lot to offer especially for a handgun at its price range, even though some may say it is a little dated. The new pistol costs $699, but in case you want to save some money, there are used 92FSs available on the market with the cost of $475. However, it is always a little bit risky to buy a used gun. Well, it’s up to you to decide whether to buy it or not. But if you’re considering purchasing a new Beretta 92FS, you may be desperate for more essential information about it. To find them simply check out Beretta’s official website or the Beretta 92 Wikipedia page including the 92FS model. Also, if you want to stay updated on what’s new in the world of Beretta, don’t forget to follow their official Facebook page.
