Quick ruger security 9 review

The Ruger Security 9 - 4” is a recoil operated semi-automatic pistol with a single-action (SA) trigger made by Sturm, Ruger & Co., Inc.. It is a quite compact and lightweight hammer-fired pistol designed to be an inexpensive option for self-defense and concealed carry. The Ruger Security 9 was introduced in 2018 and soon became very popular. This pistol relies on the use of the famous 9mm Luger cartridge and its magazine can hold up to 15+1 rounds of ammo, which is quite enough for a self-defense pistol. Performance wise, the 9 mm cartridge has somewhat more power than the .38 Special but falls well short of the .357 Magnum. The Security 9 is a double-stack, mid-sized pistol that very closely follows the dimensions of the Glock 19, but in a hammer-fired configuration that doesn’t show the hammer (it’s internal). So that’s no surprise that the G19 became one of its biggest competitors across the handgun market. Although there are many handguns similar to our Security 9, since it so closely mimics the Glock 19, it seems to be the most significant direct challenger of this pistol. If you are curious about the exact similarities and differences between these  two pistols, feel free to check them out here.

The Ruger Security 9 with its dimensions is somewhere between the concealed carry and open carry guns. This pistol comes with a 4 inch long barrel and overall, it is 7.24 inches long, 1.1 inches wide, 5 inches high with a weight of 23.7-oz when unloaded. This pistol is also available in 3.4 inches barrel length. With its double stack magazine, it can hold up to 15+1 rounds of the 9mm Luger cartridge. The safety of this internal hammer-fired pistol is assured by frame mounted manual safety.

When talking about the construction, the Ruger Security 9 is made of a glass-filled nylon polymer and features integrated glass-filled nylon grips. Its features include front and rear slide serrations, scissor-style trigger safety and accessory rail. The full-size Ruger Security 9 pistol comes with two standard 15-round magazines unless you live in an oppressed state. Those living under iron-fisted rule can get a 10-round configuration. The Compact model offers a standard 10+1 capacity and also includes two magazines. The 15-round magazines themselves cost around $36 a piece, but more affordable are double packs that cost approximately $59. The 10-round magazines cost around $35 a piece. In case this capacity is not enough for you, the magazines can be extended up to a capacity of 32 rounds.

The Security 9 - 4” initially comes with the front and rear slide serrations and accessory rail. The rail helps with the easy attachment of aftermarket accessories such as lights or lasers. You can also order a version with a factory mounted Viridian E-Series laser mounted forward of the trigger guard. Otherwise, in case the default 3-dot combat sights included are not your favourite, you can always look up for some aftermarket options.

When it comes to accuracy and the range performance, this pistol brings quite good performance. Unexpectedly, it brings such a short, crisp trigger press, which is not usual for a pistol with street price just north of $300. The trigger reset may be a little longer than expected, but it is predictable and easily discernible. The rear sight is a U-notch, which is not necessarily wrong, but can be a bit difficult to pick up the front sight in the U-notch, especially if you wear reading glasses. The 3-dot sights can also be problematic for shooters with reading glasses, as it can be harder than normal to get proper sight alignment. Therefore, those who need reading glasses are recommended to replace the dovetail rear sight. However, the Ruger Security 9 performs very accurately at a distance of 15 yards.

And what more, the overall accuracy and performance of your Ruger Security 9 can be easily upgraded to get even better results. The accuracy can be upgraded with lights and lasers available on the aftermarket. And remember, it doesn't matter if you decide to add some Ruger Security 9 aftermarket accessories to upgrade your pistol or not, you should definitely get a well-fitting Ruger Security 9 holster for it. Or in case you already have your Security 9 equipped with a light or laser, just take a look at the offer of the Ruger Security 9 light bearing holsters.

As mentioned, the Security 9 is somewhere between when it comes to concealed or open carry. If you decide to carry it as a CCW gun, it can be hidden within the Ruger Security 9 IWB holster. Otherwise, if you’re a fan of the outside the waistband carry, or you live in non-restricted state, you can choose from the offer of the Ruger Security 9 OWB holsters. As the most comfortable carry option, especially for riders, I would recommend the Ruger Security 9 shoulder holster. Not sure which one to choose? Let’s take a look at the Ruger Security 9 holsters recommendations for 2021.

You may now ask, is this pistol worth it? I would say yes and here are some of the reasons why. The Security 9 - 4” is hammer-fired, which means that the slide is somewhat easier to rack as opposed to a strike-fired model. If you are not a fan of stiff recoil springs, then you will appreciate how smooth the Ruger Security 9 feels. On top of that, this gun is ideal for those with smaller hands since the grip has a smaller circumference than many of its rivals. Another big pro of this pistol is its affordable price, as it costs under $300. That leaves room in your budget for ammo, a holster, and other accessories you might need. However, even with this little wonder, some issues may occur. If you are curious what these issues are, you can find more information here.

This was a brief description of this pistol and if you wish to know even more about the Ruger Security 9, the most essential information can be found on Ruger's website, their official Facebook page, or even on Wikipedia. You can also exchange your opinion on this pistol with other shooters on one of the Ruger forums - Ruger Forum, Ruger Pistol Forums, or even on Ruger Talk.
