About Makarov Makarov
The Makarov pistol, or PM, was designed by Nikolay Makarov in then Soviet Union. This pistol was adopted in 1951 by the Soviet Union Army and Police and become the standard sidearm, from 1951 to 1991, following a competition with aim to replace the Tokarev TT-33 semi-automatic pistol and Nagant M1895 revolver which were a bit rusty.
The major aim of the development of the Makarov pistol was to design a pistol with a simplicity and economy. Even though the nominal caliber of this pistol was 9 mm, the actual bullet was 9.22 mm in diameter, since caliber in Russia is measured a bit differently. It is measured between the grooves and not the lands of the rifling.
The PM has remained for the several decades in wide front-line service with Soviet military and police until and also beyond the end of the USSR in 1991. The Makarov was formally replaced in 2003 by the Yarygin pistol in the Russian service, although as of 2012, quite large number of Makarov’s are anyway still in Russian military and police service. Many Eastern European and former Soviet republics have adopted the PM as its service pistol and the PM even still serves. It's designer Nikolay Makarov thought the firing pin of an insufficient mass to constitute a major danger.
The Makarov PM is a semi-automatic pistol which is chambered in 9×18 what seems to be quite similar to the .380 ACP cartridge, however differs in some details. This model was designed for economical use of resources and also adequate penetration. The 9×18 utilizes a projectile of a little bit greater diameter than the .355-inch .380 cartridge and the 9×18 is also hotter as well. It is said that the Soviets adopted the 9×18 cartridge to ensure that their caliber was proprietary to their armed forces. After the break up of the Soviet Union, the Makarov pistol was really widely available in America as cash strapped and also many other nations. Defense-minded shooters immediately when it was possible scooped up the PM pistols. However, this pistol is also widely used for recreational shooters, however the double action first shot pistol from the Makarov production is a popular defense pistol.
The Makarov PM is popular to carry such as pistol safety off, often because the slide-mounted safety can be difficult to manipulate. The safety of the PM is quickly manipulated with a moderate amount of practice as it operates properly, down for off safe. Its double action trigger is smooth enough which good work may be done at close range. The PM is a little bit surprisingly well constructed and friendly pistol. This combination of efficiency and history is well appreciated to many of shooters. Whereas the original Makarov pistol was chambered with 9×18 Makarov caliber, a number have been chambered in .380 ACP ammunition. This model is primarily designed for the American market. However, the 9×18 ammunition is also available, the .380 ACP cartridge is more popular.
