About Glock 29
Glock Ges.m.b.H., trademarked as Glock is one of the most famous and successful firearm producer, well known all over the world. Engineer Gaston Glock, company's founder who had no experience with firearms manufacture or design, became one of the most successful firearms designer of all times. Glock had extensive experience in advanced synthetic polymers, knowledge of which was very important in the company's design of the first commercially successful line of polymer frame pistols.
Beginnings of this company were very interesting. Gaston Glock overheard a talk of two Austrian colonels, who were talking about the Army's Request for Proposal(RFP) for new short firearm. Glock asked the colonel if they need a new gun and he get a positive answer. He started the project immediately but as it were just a hobby for him. He had never used any gun before. He bought Walther P38, standard Austrian army duty gun, CZ 75, Beretta 92, Sig Sauer P220 9x19mm pistols. He started to stripe them down and when he found out how it is constructed he assembled them again. This method helped him to assimilate their manufacturing procedures and mechanical principles necessary for gun producing. Austrian army appealed to him that he has to show serial production gun for tests, not a prototype.
Glock answered he could design completely new gun in fixed term. So the construction of their new gun would not be so difficult, the gun should be made of less than 40 parts, that were placed in independent subgroups such as trigger mechanism, safety set and so on. It allowed to gunsmiths easy and quick replacing.
The 29 is a short recoil operated, semi-automatic pistol, chambered with 10mm Auto ammunition. It holds even less than average pistols of the same caliber, with a maximum magazine capacity of 10 rounds. This gun is constructed on the high level what makes the Glock 29 very reliable. Probably that’s why it has become so popular among the plenty of shooters, military organizations, law enforcement agencies all over the globe. In spite of it is a striker-fired pistol, the 29 even though uses a single-action trigger, what means the trigger does not cock the gun, only releases the striker when pulled. Striker cocking is performed by retracting slide. The 29 has no manual safety devices. The only operating element is the trigger.
Three internal pistol safeties became immediately deactivated when the single-action trigger is pulled, and, on the other side, automatically activated when it is released. This pistol was originally made by the Norma and chambered in the Bren Ten pistol, the 10mm Auto. Whereas the Bren Ten was not so successful, the 10mm cartridge became very popular. One of the greatest achievements of this gun model is that even the FBI announced the 29, 10mm Auto as their official sidearm. The cartridge has proven itself over the time, however many felt that this cartridge was a little bit long for semi-auto pistols. It makes the pistol grip a little bigger for some comfort levels. When the shorter .40 S&W cartridge with very similar construction was introduced to the market, it soon become more popular than the 10mm round. Doubtless, the 10mm Auto cartridge still has plenty of fans and many manufacturers are still making pistols chambered for this round.
